Everton 3 - 1 Chelsea
Steven Naismith’s hat-trick consigned Chelsea to their worst start of
the season in 29 nine years and despite Everton’s dominance and control
of the game, Mourinho insisted that his team had been better and would
have won had it not been for luck.
When asked about whether Chelsea’s run of form has led to pressure
mounting inwardly, he initially responded, “No, no,” before Chelsea’s
media officer intervened, inviting another question. Mourinho then
added: “I think the refugees are under big pressure – under big
pressure.”
Mourinho spoke at length
about the low levels of confidence in his team, admitting that it might
be difficult for Chelsea to win the league from here. By the end of the
weekend, they could trail Manchester City at the top of the Premier
League by a massive 11 points.
“Chelsea can win the next match against Arsenal for sure, but the title I don’t know because we depend on us to improve the results a lot but we also depend on other clubs above us to lose matches and this is out of our control,” he said.
Despite Chelsea’s wretched performance, Mourinho was satisfied by efforts and was only frustrated by the result. He began the day by walking out of an interview with BT Sport after being asked about his summer pursuit of Everton’s John Stones.
