Madhya Pradesh govt bans sale of meat, fish in Indore for 3 days

The Madhya Pradesh government has banned the sale of meat and fish in Indore during three days of Hindu and Jain religious festivals this month, municipal commissioner Manish Singh said on Sunday.

However, no such order has been issued in Bhopal and other cities so far.
Singh said all slaughter houses, mutton and fish markets, hotels and restaurants serving non-vegetarian food shall remain closed on Sept 17 (Ganesh Chaturthi), Sept 18 (Paryushan Parva Samvatsari - festival of forgiveness) and Sept 27 (Anant Chaturdashi). The corporation had issued a communique to this effect on September 12 night. Singh said the decision had been taken at the direction of the state government.
Recently, an eight-day meat ban during the festival time had evoked angry protests in Mumbai.  Later, the number of the ban days was reduced to two following a high court order. A similar ban, ranging from two days to a week, is, however, effective in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

While in Mumbai the state government termed the ban as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s decision, the Indore municipal commissioner said the ban was imposed in Indore following the state government order.
Singh justified the ban and said, "It is purely an administrative decision taken in view of the  religious sentiments of many people. It is meant to avert any untoward incident during the festival time."
The municipal corporation is dominated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 65 out of 85 seats.
